Walk Like an Egyptian
I've been watching Al Jazeera coverage of events unraveling in Egypt for several days now. I have very little knowledge of the nation's history nor the earlier breakout in Tunis that seemed to trigger this extraordinary revolution. Nonetheless, the courage and determination of the people there is amazing. They stand up together against guns, tanks, fighter jets.
Yet, it's also baffling that the government has been so stubborn. How is it possible to maintain the status quo after such movement? Surely there are a lot in stakes not only for Egypt's current ruler, but also for many parts of the world with the critical Suez canal and the country's position relative to Israel. But still, change is imminent, no? So whatever it takes to achieve the people's demands there would be the bar for other nations aspiring for the next reform.
Of course, in every large protest, there are casualties. In this case, it's a shame that Egypt's cultural treasures (i.e. mummies) have been damaged. Hopefully the looting doesn't continue.
I hope to visit Egypt one day. So, may the people find their way and stabilize the country. Be strong!
